When You Need to Know About the New Ontario Cabinet

Yesterday, Ontario Premier Doug Ford introduced his new cabinet at a swearing-in ceremony held at the Royal Ontario Museum. The cabinet’s size remains unchanged at 37, and it includes many familiar and experienced faces who Ford says will play an important role in guiding the province through the next four years.

Building on campaign commitments to deliver a stronger, more competitive economy, changes announced today in key ministries signal Ford’s intention to follow a pro-Ontario approach to Canada’s trade issues with the United States. He has streamlined ministerial areas of focus, similar to a wartime cabinet, to elevate activities and policies that have a direct impact on U.S.–Canada relations, interprovincial trade, and increased self-reliance in the global economy.  Critical minerals, energy, economic development in the north, transportation and housing remain top priorities.

Ford’s decision to maintain the status quo in portfolios critical to navigating current economic conditions speaks to his desire for continuity and experience in these areas. Peter Bethlenfalvy remains the Minister of Finance, Vic Fedeli stays at Economic Development, Job Creation, and Trade, and Ford himself continues to lead Intergovernmental Affairs.
